National Grid Transmission Model

The National Grid Transmission Model was developed to provide teachers with a simple-to use practical resource that illustrates key ideas about electricity. It addresses electricity generation, transmission and distribution, and provides a context for teaching about the basic principles of electromagnetism.

The booklet Understanding Electrical Transmission describes a range of teacher demonstrations that can be undertaken with the National Grid Transmission Model.

The demonstrations are intended mainly for students aged 14-16, but the approaches can be adapted for younger or for older students. The classroom materials cover electromagnetic induction, the nature and generation of alternating currents, transformers, frequency and the effect of demand on generation. The National Grid use this model as part of their workshops for visiting teachers, as well as for distribution to schools. The equipment is also available for purchase.
